We'll start with a perlin noise. Without a texture, nothign else makes sense.

Falloff
The left and right edges use a gradient raised to a power. These are exposed so the intensity of the falloff curve at the transparent edge and opaque edge are independently controlled. The opaque edge can overdrive values, impacting bloom.
Alpha Mask
A texture can be applied as a mask to shape things if desired. But it's often useful to let it wrap around geometry ant tile.
Vertex color is also supported so it can be used with custom meshes and particle systems.

Multiplied against the final result.
